Historically, the Moroccan rug was woven by the Berber women of Morocco, an art form that was handed down through the generations. These pile, knotted, and flat-woven carpets served a variety of domestic purposes including flooring coverings in tents, blankets, sleeping mats, saddle blankets and burial shrouds.  

Traditionally made from wool, the thick shag pile of the Moroccan berber rug made them useful for tribes travelling through the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. Lightweight, flat-weave rugs were used in the hotter climate of the Sahara desert and often featured more elaborate designs.
